Montreal – May 25, 2018. Carl Villeneuve-Lepage, head sommelier of the famous Montreal restaurant Toqué!, took the third place during the fifth edition of the Contest of the Best Sommelier of the Americas, held in Montreal from May 21 to 24. Organized by the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers (CAPS), in collaboration with the Association de Sommellerie Internationale (ASI), this contest brought together 20 sommeliers from 10 countries.
In his second participation (after reaching the semifinals in 2015), Mr. Villeneuve-Lepage delivered strong performances throughout the theoretical and practical tests, as well as during the grand finale held in front of an audience at the Marie Gérin Lajoie Theater. “I am really happy for this last week spent with all these great wine professionals coming from all over the world," he said, adding that he was inspired to see all this energy spent to promote the profession of sommelier and especially, that all this happened at home.
"The first position is of course welcomed for all candidates and greatly deserved by Pier-Alexis Soulière," he added. However, the best gift is to experience the preparation, practice, study, support among colleagues and, above all, to meet people just as passionate about this vast universe that is sommellerie."
This is a new success for Carl Villeneuve-Lepage who also won the title of Best Sommelier of Canada in 2017 and Best Sommelier of Quebec in 2014.
Sommelier since 2010 and holding this position at Toqué! since 2014, he was appointed head sommelier earlier this year. "We are very proud of Carl and his performance. Humble and spontaneous, he is a team player who acts as a catalyst in the service team. It is a privilege for our customers to benefit from his knowledge and advice”, said Christine Lamarche and chef Normand Laprise, co-owners and co-founders of the renowned restaurant
